The Green Effect:
How Community Involvement Is Embracing Environmentalism

There is no denying the growing importance of the environment to today’s businesses and consumers:
•    The 2007 Cone Consumer Environmental Survey showed that          one-third of Americans have more interest in the environment compared to a year ago, and 93% of them say companies have a responsibility to help preserve the environment.
•    The 2007 Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy Survey on American Attitudes on the Environment showed that 63% of Americans agree that the country is in as much danger from environmental hazards, such as global warming and pollution, as from terrorists.
•    A 2007 GfK Roper Consulting study showed that 87% of consumers are seriously concerned about the environment and that less than a third believe corporate America has fulfilled its environmental protection responsibilities well.

The environment is “hot”—and getting hotter. Today, savvy business leaders are increasingly recognizing that becoming “green” is vital to the success of their business. Employees, customers, shareholders, and others are clamoring for Corporate America to improve its environmental practices. And many companies are responding, in particular when it comes to their business operations.

But what, if anything, is happening within community involvement?

LBG Associates’ new report, The Green Effect: How Community Involvement Is Embracing Environmentalism, will look at how leading companies are incorporating environmental activities into their community involvement (CI) programs. Scheduled for publication later this year, it will address current thought leadership regarding the philosophy, program structure, funding, and execution of the best in “Green CI.”

The Green Effect report will be designed to answer the following critical questions:

•    How are companies, in general and by industry, responding from an operational and CI perspective to the growing demand to go green?
•    Are there models for environmental CI? If yes, which ones are working today?
•    How do you develop the “right” green partnerships?
•    What are the keys to aligning environmental consciousness and brand in community outreach?
•    Is CI being integrated into companies’ environmental efforts and messages? If yes, how?
•    What are environmental NGOs looking for from business?
•    How do companies engage the community in their environmental efforts?
•    How are businesses responding to employees’ desires to get involved in environmental organizations?
•    What challenges are companies facing as they try to integrate environmentalism into their CI programs?
•    What can we learn from companies overseas that are further along in their embracement of environmental issues?

Through case studies and in-depth interviews with domestic and international companies as well as selected NGOs, LBG Associates will provide a much-needed resource guide for the next step in community involvement: going green.
